It can be found in pretty much every household across America. Whether it’s sitting atop the mantle, adorned in the hallway, or hidden in a box in the attic so as to never see the light of day, we all have that one embarrassing family portrait that makes us say, “What the heck were we thinking when we took this?”

Although you may hope and pray that your family’s awkward photo doesn’t ever surface, some slip through the cracks and the most awkward ones are shared for the world to see, thanks to the Internet. Why make the mistake of taking a really hideous family picture of your own when there are so many others to laugh at? Let’s see what horrible decisions people have made throughout the years when it comes to family picture time! Take a look at this one for example:

http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/2013/03/04/the-wild-bunch/

This family thought it would be a great idea to incorporate animal print in their family picture. Awkward Family Photos captioned it as, “You Never Know What You’re Going To Find In The Net.”

#9.

Awkward family picture #9. What a gem. “You’ll Always Be Our Baby…Literally.”

#8. They may have thought it was an adorable idea at the time… but looking back, it’s probably safe to say that Care Bears are not for adults. Can you guess who Grumpy Bear is?

#7. Forget putting the whole family picture on a mantle, dad is way ahead of us. “They proudly displayed him for everyone to see.”

#6. It’s only going to get more awkward from here. AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com calls this one “As The World Turns…Or Perhaps War Of The Worlds.”

#5. I spy with my little eye… there’s a baby in there somewhere.

#4. Seen atop their mountainous home, they wondered how many people generations they could fit into this family picture. If it’s true that one’s company, two’s a crowd, and three’s a party, then what the heck do we call this?

#3. Two words: family denial. While dad insisted on going shirtless, everyone had to find a way to cope.

#2. “Over The Rainbow.” Well…it seemed like a good idea at the time.

#1. Perhaps we’ve come to one of the most awkward family pictures of all time. Take a minute to just look at this little treasure and laugh. There really are no words for this one. Actually, maybe a few: A close-knit family does everything together.

So these photos are pretty awesomely awkward to say the least, but it’s the story behind it that makes a family look back and laugh… or cringe. Family pictures have always been important and seen as a keepsake for all times. However, most families will want a portrait that they can truly be proud of and alas, there is hope!
